When So Cupcake opened up, (3939 S. Highland Dr.) I believe in February, I thought it was such a clever and cute idea...I think I even called it original. So I said, "Hey roommates, would you like to drive all the way to Salt Lake City with me to eat some yummy cupcakes at this clever, cute, original cupcake bakery called So Cupcake. They only have cupcakes!"
We decided to make a day of it. We ate dinner at my parent's house, went shopping at fashion place mall, lost track of time, and then raced to So Cupcake at 6:47 in an attempt to make it there before it closed at 7:00.
We jumped on I-215 and then raced down 3900 S., got stuck behind one of those blasted minivans, made a left onto Highland, drove past So Cupcake because it is hidden in a shady parking lot behind the Dojo, flipped a perfectly legal U-turn and put the car in park just as they were locking the door.
We got out of Moose with our best pouty faces and stared at the two men inside. They opened the door and we apologized profusely, but explained that we had made a pilgrimage to taste the goodness of their delicatessens. As one of the men sat at the cash register, counting his earnings, he offered us the last remaining mini cupcakes. They had completely sold out of all but 5 little baby cupcakes which they kindly gave to us weary travelers free of charge.
Fast forward to March. Road trip to San Francisco! We are wandering around Ghirardelli Square and we stumble upon another cupcake shop. They were huge and delicious. A chocolate cupcake with gooey caramel in the center piled high with Ghirardelli dark chocolate and topped off with...coarse salt??? Not good. Whoever thought of that should be fired. Picking off the little grains of salt after the first bite took a good chunk of the joy out of the experience. I did glean a bit of insight from this experience: turns out So Cupcake was not as original as I originally thought. Tasty nonetheless.
Months later (last Wednesday), back in Utah my BFF, Corissa, introduces me to Mini's Cupcake (800 S. in between State and Main). Trouble! I think Mini's is the winner. They are so tasty that I'm not even going to try to describe them. My fav is the peanut butter chocolate one. I can't get these little devils off my mind.
On Monday night, I thought it would be fun to take my parents to So Cupcake for a little FHE treat. We park directly in front of the CLOSED sign at around 7:24. I forgot. Upon further inspection of the posted hours of operation it is good to note that So Cupcake isn't opened at all on Sunday and MONDAY. My bad.
Mother spotted Neilson's Frozen Custard across the street which we have heard great things about, so we zip across Highland Drive walk up to the door to see a sign that says, "We do not accept credit or DEBIT cards." Who carries cash these days? Certainly not me and I ran out of checks (which are so 1992) about a week ago so we were once again denied sweet tooth satisfaction. I would not go home empty handed. So where did we end up? At a Gelato shop...don't even get me started on the rise of the Gelato shop. Supply and demand people, supply and demand.
Cupcakes are the new doughnut.
Gelato is the new ice cream.
And what's the deal with this all natural Frozen Yogurt? What is that?
Yoasis, FroYo, Spoon Me, Red Mango.
What's wrong with Cold Stone?
Isn't that enough for you people?

No kidding! Like four yogurt places just popped up in the last 2 months!
PS. I have yet to try one of those cupcakes from any of said 'only-cupcake' stores.
...perhaps another pilgrimage? :)
Uh-oh... but no seriously.. we should! You are so funny... I think the last portion of this one should be read in a Jerry Seinfeld voice...
