One Year Older and Wiser Too

Today is a special day. 49 years ago today, my dad graced the world with his presence. Happy Birthday, Dad! I hope that all of your wildest dreams come true. And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for…a list, in no particular order, of why my dad is cooler than your dad.

He is a hard worker and he taught me to appreciate the value of a job well done and somehow manages to make work fun. For example: reshingling (did I make that word up?) the roof was one of the best projects known to mankind.

He loves to go camping and even took me on a daddy daughter overnighter every summer when I was growing up.

He is very funny. He hardly ever tells lame jokes, which is a plus.

He was an all-star football and basketball player back in the day. Those Boise babies didn’t know what hit ‘em when Pocatello’s very own Highland Rams came to town. He taught me all about sports and we spent hours playing catch and shooting hoops, which paid off seeing as how my brother and I were both all-stars as well.

He always puts his family first. I know that there is nothing that my dad would rather do than be with his family.

He lets me pick out his clothes when we go shopping.

He is an excellent photographer and is always encouraging me to develop my talents…get it? Develop? Bad pun. Moving right along…

He can grill up a mean steak, and he is a master dutch oven chef.

He is an excellent story teller. I still have nightmares about Old Man Jack. Ok, not really. But I do think about Old Man Jack and wondering if he is still wandering through the woods, looking for his next victim every time I go camping.

He has a great appreciation for music and raised us listening to “the good stuff.” You know, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, Tina Turner…that’s right, I said Tina Turner. I do love all of those artists, but the good news is that he isn’t one of those dads who never moved on musically once they turned 30. He loves Coldplay and he even took me to the Tim McGraw and Faith Hill concert.

My dad could beat up your dad.

Amanda - Thank you for my wonderful birthday tribute. I know that I should say something witty at this point, but what could I say that would be more funny than the picture of the dude in the sombrero that you are calling your dad. Poor guy. Thanks, though, for your many kind words. It made my day. It brought back some great memories of fun times that we had together and as a family. And just think, how many daughters can say that they shingled a roof? I'm guessing not many. I do apologize for giving you sleepless nights waiting for Old Man Jack to rip open the tent. Oh, by the way, I let you pick out my clothes because you have much better taste than I do. And never forget that the greatest band ever is The Eagles. Anyway, thanks again. You are, and always have been, the best daughter that any father ever had. You and Doug made it very easy to be a dad. Love you!

*sigh* I read this late! I'll admit, your dad is pretty cool, and one of the best Uncles EVER. Hope he didn't burn the house down with all those candles. ;) J/K I don't think we even put candles on my dad's cakes anymore.
