I got McCanned

In case you've been living under a rock, let me fill you in. The economy has gone to hell in a hand basket and I no longer have my sweet job.

Yes, this bites big time. But I've been prepared for it. We had layoffs back in January with rumors of more to come. They came today. Over the past month or two I've been grateful that I had a job, but not completely satisfied with it. This is just this kick in the pants that I need to finally figure out what I want to do with my life. Teach high school, get a masters degree, move to a new state, flip burgers...I can do anything. I just have to decide what it is that I really want to do. In the meantime I will be collecting my unemployment check and watching Oprah.

While my first response is to mourn over the loss of my endless supply of Diet Coke with Lime, peanuts, york peppermint patties, peanut m&m's, oatmeal, and starbucks hot chocolate, as well as 18 days of PTO, insurance, 4 summer Fridays, and my wonderful coworkers...I have decided to focus on the positive:

I can blog everyday
I don't have to smell coffee
I don't have to see dead roaches
I can watch Oprah and Ellen
I can go to the gym in the middle of the day
I can sleep in
I don't have to wear makeup

I'm sure that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'd love to hear your suggestions regarding what to do with my free time and any ideas as to what I should do with my future. Words of sympathy, encouragement, and humor are welcome.

If you're still unemployed in May, we can be bums together!!
As I can't even start looking for a job until June... I'm sure we'll find things to occupy our time. :)
There's no one else I'd rather be an unemployed bum with than you.
(uh.. not that I'm glad you lost your job... I mean... oh, you know)

Hey Mandy, sometime life is just annoying like that...sorry to read about your loss of the diet coke, the fiber (oatmeal) and the other protein (cock roaches). In your honor we are stuffing our faces with chocolate pudding and ice cream, so you don't have to! although if you need to come indulge, you are always welcome (just not toningt, because we ate it ALL) Keep your chin up little skooch----Love your two aunties :)

LAME. I'm so sorry to hear this; but I laughed out loud at the title. You are much too clever to go job-less for long, my friend. Sheesh, I can't believe this, it's like a part of me just got let go, too. Well, to add to your bright side list, you can go visit your nephew, eh? Or your friends in California :). I'm just saying...

Bummer, sorry to hear that. Let's talk sometime this week, k? I did like Shannon's suggestion of coming to see your nephew, though. ;)

And, to help pass the time and raise your spirits...

You could always start to write a novel. It's not hard, just open a word document, title it, “What she didn’t know.” (This is random and off the top of my head, so you can elaborate if you want) and then start a paragraph. “She sat down for the first time today.” And there you have it! You’ve started a novel. And then when people ask what you have been up to since you’ve been laid off, you can say you’ve started to write a novel. Then you sound productive, and no one is the wiser ;)

WHAT?!?!?!?! So sorry to hear that. Not going to lie. Unemployment sucks. My greatest words of advise...start a new hobby. Or, an even better idea, come look for jobs in DC with me. Yeah. That's a good plan!! Love your guts.

PS...Still no word. You know what I mean ;)

Something totally awesome that you should do: travel around America on a Greyhound bus with a video camera and make a documentary of the all the crazy people. If you make it back alive, you will be a hometown hero.

That totally sucks about the job, though. I think you'd be a great high school teacher.

Wow. That sucks. I like Teresa's idea and a trip to NC would be good for you, too! Plus, having extra time to hang with your aunties and cousins doesn't hurt, either!! **Hugs** Let's get together!
