I set out to make scotcheroos (like rice crispy treats but with peanut butter and a chocolate chip/butterscotch chip layer) tonight and I failed.
The crispy layer was a success, the chocolate layer not so much. The recipe said to melt the chips in a saucepan. Not a double boiler. The result was a chocolate brick-like blob. The chips never melted. They never burned. They just formed into an amoeba.
So I attempted to melt them double in a makeshift double broiler since I don't own a real one. No luck. My mom suggested the microwave. Again nothing. So I added a little milk and the blob magically turned into a beautifully melted consistency, but I felt that it need just a little more heat to really melt all the way...
...bad idea:
It looks like...yeah. I know. Gross.
I was sad and distraught, but I will buy another bag and I will master the skill of melting chocolate tomorrow. If at first you don't succeed, try try again.

Haha ha, that IS gross!
And I can't stop laughing at your distraught face! Lol
Not that I like you being distraught, I mean...
Anyway, I bet you just used crappy chocolate chips, eh? It's the only explanation, really.
Hey, I've been there. My first banana bread experience was pitiful. I thought maybe I’ll just stick to chocolate chip cookies. But alas, said banana bread has been perfected, and is quite the family favorite. I have faith in you!!
try melting your chips in the microwave on defrost
